family photo outfit inspo

It’s October, which means a time to gather the kids, brush their hair, make them put on clothes that are typically far too warm for the weather outside and brave the FAMILY PHOTO. Honestly, as extra as it may seem, taking a family picture every year is so special to me. Kids change so quickly and it’s a wonderful way to capture everyone at that moment in time.

Sharing a few outfit inspiration collages and TONS and tons of wardrobe options for the whole family. I broke each look down into a simple formula and provided several options for each component. Hopefully this takes some stress out of the situation and allows you to just be happy with your family in front of the camera.

A few tips on dressing the group:

  • Avoid straight up matching everyone in the same pattern head to toe, it can make you all sort of blend together like one bib blob. Pops of the same pattern totally okay though.

  • If doing a print or pattern, have only one “stand out”. You’ll see in the collages below, but typically it’s one plaid or floral dress and the rest are pretty solid or a very small print that reads as a solid from a distance.

  • Layers are good - layering a sweater, vest, or blazer over a shirt help give dimension to a look. Blazers or cardigans are also great if you’re conscious of your weight - they essentially divide your body into thirds.

Outfit Inspiration 1: Casual Ranch

Women: Sea Dress / Brown Riding Boots / White Cowboy Boots / Earrings Men: Blazer / White Shirt / Jeans

Boys: Shirt / Cords / Boots Girls: Dress / Bow / Knee Socks / Shoes

I love this easy and slightly cowboy-chic look for the family.

The Equation: floral dress for mom + boys in brown/tans + girl in a solid color from mom’s dress + neutral accessories

This Sea dress cuts you in at the waist in such a flattering way and the open neckline draws the attention to your face. It’s in stock in most sizes and on sale here! Pair it with either a tall boot or a fun cowboy bootie. Channeling Yellowstone vibes for the dues with corded blazer and pants in brown tones. Pick any color from mom’s dress for the “pop” of color, in this case a sweet rosy pink dress with darling ric rac trim.

Outfit Inspiration 2: Red & Navy Holiday

WOMEN: Red Dress / Bow Pumps / Pearl Earrings MEN: Shawl Collar Sweater / Chinos / Loafers

BOYS: Plaid Pants / White Shirt / Loafers GIRLS: Blue Dress / Red Bow / White Tights / Red Shoes BABY: Plaid Bubble

While the trend in family pictures lately has been a bit more casual and outdoorsy, there is nothing like a dressed up, classic holiday look.

The Equation: solid red dress for mom + kids in plaid + dad in navy

I think this red dress is stunning (it has a big bow in the back!) and this style is also pretty. I adore this classic Christmas plaid with a fun twist adding the light blue touches. This coordinating look is great for photos or any holiday event!

Outfit Inspiration 3: Golden Hour Fall

WOMEN: Gold Dress / Platform Sandal / White Booties / Blue Earrings / Tortoise Earrings MEN: Windowpane Shirt / Navy Pants / Driving Loafers

BOYS: Shawl Sweater / Khaki Pants / Boots GIRLS: Floral Dress / Shoes / Headband

This perfect fall look for the family is so warm and pretty for an outdoor golden hour shoot.

The Equation: solid dress in fall tones for mom + floral dress for girls + subtle plaid for dad + sweater for boy

The star here is the floral dress for girls - I love this one, this one, and this one. These sweaters for boys look so cute and aren’t scratchy! Keep the plaid on dad small and simple to not compete with the floral dress.

Outfit Inspiration 4: Red & Green Holiday

WOMEN: Green Toile Dress / Metallic Sandal / Earrings MEN: Navy Suit

GIRLS: Green Cord Dress / Red Smocked Bubble Set / Red Shoes / Red Bow

BOYS: Red Button Down Shirt / Green Cords / Green Jon Jon / Peter Pan Shirt / White Shoes / Knee Socks

Another dressed up family look - I’m really loving the idea of a more formal vibe for family photos!

The Equation: green floral dress for mom + kids in coordinating red and green corduroy + dad in a suit or sport coat

I ordered this dress for holiday parties this year and it is gorgeous! It’s a thicker cotton material. I also love this similar style and this one. Keeping the kids in classic smocked corduroy looks is so precious and they can wear these for multiple holiday events all season long. I think my husband always looks so handsome in a suit, so dressing dad up for pics seems like such a nice touch.
